Fandom: Queer as Folk

Posted on

Fandom is a series in which I detail my favourite shows and reflect on why they speak to me. These posts will contain spoilers.

I have always loved television. Like REALLY loved television. In fact, my mother informed me a few months ago that, even as a small child, if we didn’t make it home to watch Sesame Street every single day, there was hell to pay. I remember racing home after school every day in the early to mid 90s to watch Degrassi (the original, both Junior High and High, then in syndication). I loved those characters. Joey Jeremiah was probably my first crush. I spent my evenings watching whatever I was allowed to, although I was particularly fond of Kratt’s Creatures and Muppets Tonight.  However, when I reflect back on my 20 some years of television watching the show that stands out, the one that hits me so viscerally that I sometimes tear up just thinking about it, was one that aired while I was in high school. The Big Bang Theory has never been perfect. It is, after all, a Chuck Lorre production. Big Bang has shown a variety of interesting and nuanced relationships between its characters, punctuated by the occasional joke that crosses the line (often related to fatness, queerness or gender essentialism).

RECAP: Bomb Girls 2×08 “Fifth Column”

Oh Bomb Girls, how I love thee.

After the too-soon end of Being Erica, I wasn’t sure I could love another Canadian drama so soon. While CBC’s Being Erica will forever hold a place in my heart as one of the most endearing and original Canadian dramas, Global’s Bomb Girls sucked me right in the first time I watched it. The second season has showed no sign of letting up on the awesome, and its recent return from hiatus has been a port in the from from the miserable Canadian spring weather we’ve been having. RECAP: Being Human (North American) 3×12 “Always a Bridesmaid, Never Alive”

Being Human is bolting towards the finish line for the season, and its penultimate episode worked to resolve some storylines while setting us up for the finale. In many ways, this episode had a finale feeling to it, it was the episode cliffhangers that really set us up for the final showdown. Be aware, full episode spoilers below! Read the rest of this entry
